The Association for Real Estate and Tourism Development of Brazil (ADIT Brasil) promoted the Seminar on Planned Communities, Subdivisions and Urban Development (COMPLAN) to discuss the challenges of large urban projects, neighborhoods and planned communities, subdivisions and condominiums.

The event was held in a hybrid format (online and in person) and brought together entrepreneurs from the civil construction sector and the most relevant urban developers in Brazil with the purpose of generating business and reflections on the different aspects of planned cities.

Clarice Mendonça — Marketing Manager of Pedra Branca Group — a company associated with ADIT, was invited to participate alongside Lorena Babot – Architect and Urbanist at Habitasul (SC) from Jurerê Internacional in the Placemaking in Practice panel, mediated by Jorge Pacheco from STATE.

The panel presented applications and developments on Placemaking, an innovative approach focused on the planning, design and management of public spaces. On the occasion, Clarice shared the experience of actively participating in the development of Pedra Branca Creative City in a neighborhood-city model of sustainable urban planning.

The sustainable urban planning of Pedra Branca Creative City is inspired by the New Urbanism. The definition of the vocation of the location was what guided its development into a family-oriented place, where it is possible to live, work, study and have fun within walking distance. By defining the vocation of the place, the location gained a new centrality with infrastructure that provides the mixed use of urban space, bringing together in an integrated and accessible way several options of services, leisure and education. Initiatives that help boost the local economy, as well as provide a better quality of life for residents and visitors.

The promotion of actions and events are part of the strategy adopted by Pedra Branca Creative City to encourage life on the street, as well as the application of urban kindness to develop an urban architecture focused on people. This type of initiative encourages outdoor living and the sharing of urban space to promote the coexistence of a diverse community that contributes to the development of accessible, dynamic and vibrant places.

Connection with the surroundings

The mixed use of urban space encourages community life, promoting connections that naturally generate innovation and new businesses. Architecture designed for people promotes behavior change and a sense of belonging. In addition, the actions are planned together with the main stakeholders involved in a collaborative way (residents, shopkeepers and institutions), contributing to the formation of the local cultural identity.

Pedra Branca Creative City is recognized as a new landmark in urban projects for public and private initiatives. It seeks to involve the main stakeholders to include everyone in the actions created. Each experimentation in the use of the urban environment contributes to improving the urban planning of the neighborhood-city, considering the needs of the people who live, work or visit the location.

Faced with the uncertain future and the challenges of rediscovering the urban environment in the post-pandemic, cities must be redesigned so that it is possible to regain space on the streets, adopting the necessary security measures in the new normal. In this sense, the concept of Placemaking has been considered a trend in the future of cities.
